玩家们扮演星际文明的领袖，向一个新近发现的星团扩张。他们通过抽取世界进行探索、收集知识指示物、招募盟友，并在各个星系中放置栖息地、采集器和殖民地。 每回合，玩家从探索（揭示一个世界并获得知识）、适应（激活栖息地或获得一名盟友）、建造（放置采集器或殖民地）、收获（从采集器收集资源）或密谋（抽取任务和/或盟友）等行动中选择两个行动（可以重复选择同一行动）。当一名玩家放置完自己的最后一个殖民地时，游戏结束。计分时，玩家将根据星系控制权、未使用的知识以及完成的任务获得分数。
