Fresco: Big Box

2014 · Renacimiento

Fresco: Big Box

Players act as master painters restoring a Renaissance church fresco by buying, mixing and applying paints. Each round begins with choosing what time to wake up, which sets turn order but affects apprentice happiness and efficiency. Players place apprentices to perform actions: purchase pigments, mix colors, work on sections of the fresco, paint portraits to earn money, or send apprentices to the opera to improve morale. Scoring centers on completing fresco sections that require specific paint combinations, so resource management and timing against other players are important. The game supports modular expansions that can be added or omitted to adjust complexity and options.

This is a solid resource management game in the tradition of you get A to get B to spend B for points. Here, you pick up paint cubes then mix them and spend the mixed cubes for tiles which are points. The game has a lot of neat extra things that can score you extra production or points here and there. There are a ton of modules that you can add or subtract from the game, keeping it interesting. Turn order in this game is crucial as you are all competing for the same set of tiles.

Great game, and while I prefer some expansions over others, it's nice to have them all in one box for variety. I'd recommend playing with the first 3 expansions every time, then adding 1-2 others.
