Pan Am

Players compete to build an international airline empire during the golden age of air travel. Bidders vie for landing rights, purchase aircraft with different ranges, and leverage insider connections to expand routes across a world map. Players can sell routes to the dominant carrier to realize profits and invest proceeds in further expansion or in that carrier’s stock, navigating industry events that unfold over four decades. The game focuses on auctioning, route management, fleet development, and timing investments as the aviation landscape changes.

How do I get landing rights at a city—what are my options?

There are four ways: have an Airport there, have that city's Destination card, discard one Destination card of the same region, or discard two Destination cards of a different region (the discard options grant landing rights only long enough to claim one Route). (Page 7)

Do I have to assign all my Engineers every round or can I leave some unassigned?

You may set an Engineer aside if you cannot or choose not to assign it; you simply take that Engineer back at the beginning of the next round. (Page 10)

When can I play Directive cards—do I need an Engineer on Directives to play them?

Each Directive shows the phase and step when it can be played and may be used any time during that step; however, Directive cards that refer to resolving an Engineer can only be played when you have an Engineer assigned to the indicated area and must be played directly before or after resolving that Engineer. (Page 8)

What happens if I win a bid but don’t have enough money to pay it?

If you can’t afford your bid, you must sell Stock (each sold stock gives current Stock Price minus $2); if you still can’t pay after selling all your Stock you lose all your Money and don’t gain the action’s benefit. This is the only time selling Stock is allowed. (Pages 11–12)

Can any Plane claim any Route, or are there restrictions?

A Plane must have a range equal to or greater than the Route’s distance and you must have Landing Rights at both cities to claim it (unless a card grants a free Route). (Pages 6, 13, 16)

How is my income calculated during the Income step—do Airports add income?

Your income equals the sum of the distances of your claimed Routes plus any Airport bonuses; placing an Airport increases your income tracker by 1 (and the Income step pays the amount shown on your Income Tracker). (Pages 12, 15)
