Hamburgum

Players guide prominent families in 17th-century Hamburg as the city grows under prosperity and trade. They produce beer, sugar and cloth, build houses and warehouses, and vie for berths in the harbor to ship goods overseas. Action selection and placement determine access to production sites and building locations, while donations to churches and other prestige actions decide the final ranking. Play supports strategic planning around resource management, location control and timing of shipments.

This is a roundel game where you are building out a little network of buildings, which when build increase the production of your resource generating actions. You then sell the resources for money in the market, and use the money to buy building materials. Building materials then go to making more buildings or constructing the church spaces which grant you victory scoring tiles with variable rewards depending on where and how you've build yourself out. The game feels repetitive and maybe a little too basic, however I did such a bad job at pathing my way through it that I can't help but be interested to better understand the efficiency puzzle of this game. This game is designed by Mac Gerdts who I've been recently growing to appreciate more and more for these very focused, classical euro designs and I think this might be a game I really connect with once I understand it a little better. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment

The more I play this, the more I enjoy it. No luck, but the idea of donating to churches is one that I certainly can get behind!
